The Outdoor Environment
Being outside is good for everyone's wellbeing and mental health. During the first lockdown, the British public voted 'owning an allotment' as the most desirable 'possession' for promoting wellbeing! At St Peter's, we are blessed with extensive grounds, including a very large playing field and a dedicated woodland area which is used for Forest School and other outdoor curriculum learning. Learning is planned so that there are many opportunities to take advantage of the grounds.
The school also has a well-developed garden area which is used primarily for growing vegetables. Pupils nurture young plants from seed and then plant out and maintain. The harvested produce is usually sold to parents although we have also sold our harvests outside Waitrose in Farnham and in 2021, we had a stall at the Farnham Sustainability Fair in the town centre. Annual produce varies, but we always have: grapes, rhubarb, strawberries, chard, beans and lettuce. We have held 'bring a grandparent' afternoons where KS1 children garden alongside a grandparent and then enjoy a story with tea and cake. We have made rhubarb jam to sell at school fairs and have even pickled grapes! In our Peace Garden we grow herbs which are used in both the indoor and outdoor cookery sessions.
